Flamengo is one win away from its seventh state basketball championship. On Friday night (November 11.11), the red-and-black team crushed Tijuca 101-73 at the Hélio Maurício gymnasium in Gávea, in the first match of the best-of-three final. The next match will be on Tuesday (November 15.11), the club's anniversary, at 17 p.m., also in Gávea. If necessary, the third match will be the following day at 19 p.m., at the same venue. Flamengo has 36 state titles, six consecutive.
The red-and-black stars shone: American David Jackson was the game's top scorer with 25 points. Marcelinho scored 21, and Leandrinho, 20. It was Leandrinho's first official match in the red-and-black jersey in Brazil. Since signing, he had played in six friendlies and the first stage of the South American League in Argentina.
The game started almost an hour late because the scheduled referee didn't show up to officiate. Both teams had to wait for the referee who was officiating the first match of the State Youth Championship semifinals, between Flamengo and Fluminense, in Laranjeiras.
Flamengo played a very good first half and, right away, took an 8-0 lead, closing the quarter at 27-21. The red-and-black team remained unthreatened in the following period and, with a three-pointer from David Jackson, went into halftime leading 59-38. In the third quarter, forward/point guard Duda, who had been out since July, when he underwent surgery on his right shoulder, entered the court for the first time this season and the red-and-black team closed the quarter at 81-59. In the last period, with a good defense, Flamengo managed the advantage until closing at 101-73.
"It was a long wait until the game started (due to the refereeing issue), but what matters is that we did our job and won. But now we don't have much time to celebrate because there's another game on Tuesday and we have to pay close attention to this Tijuca team," said Leandrinho.
For American David Jackson, despite the advantage on the scoreboard, the game was not easy.
"It was a tough game. We're still getting into the swing of things, getting into rhythm, but we have to maintain a high level to achieve further victories," he said.
