Flamengo remains close behind the NBB leaders. Playing at home, the team defeated Minas Gerais 99-89 on Tuesday night (March 06.03th) at the Hélio Maurício gymnasium in Gávea, in a postponed match from the third round of the competition's second half. Now, the Rubro-negro has 17 wins in 22 matches and remains in third place in the overall standings, behind Pinheiros and São José, respectively, both with one more game (18 wins in 23 matches).
Marcelinho led all scorers with 27 points. Caio Torres also had 19 and Hélio had 17. Kammerichs grabbed 11 rebounds. Flamengo's next match in the competition will be on March 15.03th, against Franca, in Franca.
Flamengo dominated the first half. With a lot of variation in their play, the team took a 26-19 lead and closed the first quarter at 30-24. In the second quarter, the lead reached 16 points (46-30) and the Rio de Janeiro team went into halftime leading 50-38, with 13 points from Marcelinho and 10 from David Jackson.
Despite some defensive issues, the team closed the third quarter at 74 x 60. Minas scored five points in a row at the start of the final quarter, but Flamengo soon regained control of the match and closed the game at 99 x 89.
"It was a tough game, as their rival is fighting for a playoff spot. But the most important thing was that Flamengo showed more determination and, despite still making some defensive mistakes, was much better than in the last round, against Vila Velha. We won and stay close to the leaders, and that's what matters now," said Kammerichs.
Center Caio Torres agrees:
"It was a tougher game than we expected because the defense wasn't that good yet. We have to improve on that fundamental to fight for the title," he concluded.
