Fla defeats Español and qualifies in the Liga das Américas
The red-black basketball team beat the Chilean team 85-66 and achieved an unprecedented feat in the club's history.

Three games and three wins. Flamengo achieved the long-awaited and unprecedented qualification for the second phase of the Liga das Américas undefeated. On Thursday night (January 13.01), the team defeated Español (CHI) 85-66 in the final match of the first phase of the competition, in Ibarra (EQU). This is the fourth edition of the tournament, considered the most important on the continent, and Flamengo had never advanced beyond the first phase. Now, the team awaits the remaining results to determine its group in the next phase.
With a strong performance, Marcelinho led the game with 35 points. The forward/guard also grabbed 12 rebounds (a double-double), dished out five assists, and made five steals. Forward Teichmann scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Before the start of the game, a minute of silence was held for the victims of the rains in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro.
In the first quarter, Flamengo struggled defensively, and Español took a 9-2 lead. Point guard F. Bravo was a standout performer, converting two three-pointers. Flamengo tied the game at 16-16, but the Chileans ended up taking a 16-19 lead in the fourth quarter. In the second half, Flamengo closed the gap with a three-pointer from Duda (31-32). After two points from Guto, Marcelinho hit two more three-pointers, and the Rio de Janeiro team took the lead: 37-32. The lead reached 10 points at halftime: 42-32.
In the third quarter, Flamengo started imposing its rhythm and the difference reached 17 points: 53 x 36. Rubro-negro closed the quarter at 56 x 48. In the last quarter, Flamengo did not have many difficulties and remained ahead on the scoreboard until the end at 85 x 66.
The first coach to take Flamengo to the second phase of the competition, Argentine Gonzalo Garcia was happy with the result.
"The tournament's results were highly positive. We achieved our goal, which was to take the team to the second round. We had good and bad moments in the tournament, but what matters is qualifying," said Gonzalo.
Winger/point guard Marcelinho was also happy, but said that Flamengo still needs to improve for the next stage.
"We came here to qualify, and we achieved our goal. But we have to improve a lot if we want to win the tournament. The demands in the next round will be even greater," explained the player, who posed for photos with the Español players at the end of the match.
