Already qualified for the quarterfinals, Flamengo concluded its participation in the NBB qualifying phase with an important victory over Tijuca, 83-76, on Thursday night (April 5th) at Tijuca Tênis Clube. The Rubro-Negro now has 21 wins in 28 matches and now awaits the results of Brasília's games – on April 6th, against Minas, and on April 10th, against Bauru – to determine its final standing. Before the match, Flamengo was in fourth place, and could still move up one position if Brasília stumbles in either of its two games. Flamengo's opponent in the quarterfinals will only be known after the round of 16, between the teams ranked fifth through 12th.
The Red-Black team played without three players: captain Marcelinho, who is still recovering from a fractured middle finger on his left hand; center Wagner, who has plantar fasciitis in his right foot; and winger Guto, who has lower back pain. Caio Torres led all scorers with 24 points.
Flamengo, playing well on defense, closed the first quarter 27-23, with 11 points from center Caio Torres. In the second, Tijuca tied the game at 36-36, leaving the game evenly matched. A Helio layup put Flamengo ahead 45-44 at halftime.
The game remained balanced and Flamengo closed the third quarter with a one-point disadvantage: 57 x 58. In the last quarter, Rubro-negro returned to imposing its game and, with a good performance by American Chris Hayes, closed the game at 83 x 76.
"We knew it would be a tough match, as it was a life-or-death game for Tijuca. We did our part and I'm very happy to have been able to help the team," said Hayes, who scored 16 points.
"It's a Rio classic and it couldn't have been any different. For us, the victory was important to gain confidence for the next stage," added Kammerichs.
Flamengo started with: Fred (2), David Jackson (14), Duda (9), Kammerichs (10) and Caio Torres (24). Entered: Teichmann (2), Helio (6), Chris Hayes (16).
