Flamengo defeated Tijuca 90-78 in a training match held on Thursday night (October 27.10) at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium in Gávea. The match, played behind closed doors, served as preparation for the first phase of the South American League, starting on the 3rd, in Córdoba, Argentina. The match had five quarters of 10 minutes each, and American David Jackson finished as the top scorer with 24 points. Guto also stood out with 22 points.
Due to tendonitis, star player Leandrinho was spared from training. Flamengo also did not have captain Marcelinho, who is with the Brazilian national team competing in the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Duda, who is recovering from shoulder surgery.
Flamengo dominated the entire match, and coach Gonzalo Garcia took the opportunity to test various formations with the team and implement the plays he's been practicing since the beginning of the season. The defensive system, one of the coach's biggest concerns, was also well-observed. The quarter-final scores were: 20-12; 33-26; 53-45; 73-58; and 90-78.
