Flamengo got off to a strong start on its journey to the NBB4 semifinals. In one of the best matches of the competition so far, the team defeated Uberlândia 110-108 in the second overtime (90-90 in normal time) in its quarterfinal playoff debut on Saturday night (April 28.04) at the Uberlândia Tênis Clube gymnasium in Minas Gerais. The second game of the best-of-five tournament will be Tuesday (May 01.05) at 17 p.m. at Tijuca Tênis Clube. Flamengo will then return to the court on Friday (May 04.05) at 19 p.m. at the same venue.
If necessary, the fourth and fifth games will be played on May 08.05 and May 11.05, in Uberlândia and Rio, respectively. Having finished the qualifying round in the top four, Flamengo gained home-court advantage in the quarterfinals.
In Saturday's game, American David Jackson led all scorers with 29 points. Caio Torres also stood out with 25 points, and Kammerichs had a double-double (16 points and 12 rebounds).
Uberlândia took the lead, making it 10-6, but a pass from Kammerichs turned the score around to 11-10. They then opened up a six-point lead (18-12) and finished the quarter ahead 22-21. With a strong defense, Flamengo dominated the second quarter. A pass from Jackson opened up a 10-point lead (43-33) and went into halftime leading 45-36.
After the break, Flamengo continued to play better, maintaining a 10-point lead until midway through the third quarter. But, in a moment of sluggish concentration, the Rio de Janeiro team allowed the home team to close the gap. Still, they finished the quarter ahead 67-69. In the final quarter, the home team took the lead 80-76, and the match remained evenly matched, ending in a 90-90 tie.
Without Marcelinho, who was eliminated with five fouls (Teichmann and Chris Hayes also left with five fouls each), Flamengo had chances to win, but extra time ended tied at 104 x 104. In the second extra time, the game remained balanced and exciting until the end, with Flamengo winning 110 x 108.
"It was an exciting game, with all the makings of a decisive match. The victory in the first leg, away from home, is very important for us, but now it's in the past. We can't think we're in a comfortable situation, because every game will be like this, decided by the details. Our only advantage now will be playing at home, and we want to take advantage of that," said Marcelinho.
Flamengo started with: Hélio (8), David Jackson (29), Marcelinho (20), Kammerichs (16) and Caio Torres (25). Entered: Chris Hayes (3), Fred (2), Teichmann (7), Duda (-) and Wagner (-).
