Flamengo achieved its objective and beat Uberlândia in a friendly match held on Thursday night (13.10). With its full strength on the court, the red-black team beat the Minas Gerais team 105 x 86, at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium, in Gávea. Center Caio Torres, one of Flamengo's new signings for the 2011/2012 season, was the top scorer, with 21 points.
The friendly served to get the new team up to speed, including three other "newcomers": NBA star Leandrinho, Argentine Kammerichs, a bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and American point guard David Jackson. It also serves as part of the team's preparation for the season's two biggest challenges: the NBB and the South American League, both in November.
"We knew we would struggle in the first few games. But we'll only gain momentum if we play a series of games. It's this sequence that will give us the playing ability. We're likely to become a great team," said captain Marcelinho.
The game started evenly, but by the end of the first quarter, Flamengo had opened up a good lead: 29 x 20. After that, they were no longer threatened, closing the first half at 56 x 45 and the third quarter at 76 x 69, until sealing the victory by 105 x 86. Coach Gonzalo Garcia took the opportunity to test various formations, putting all the players on the court.
Unlike last Sunday's friendly (09.10), in Brasília, when Flamengo was defeated (85 x 82), point guard Leandrinho left the court satisfied with the result. The player had been out of action since April, due to an injury to his right wrist.
"Today the team played much better than against Brasília and I think from now on it will only get better. It was my first victory in the red and black shirt and my first game at home, so I'm very happy," he said.
Flamengo started with: Leandrinho (15), Marcelinho (17), David Jackson (19), Kammerichs (9) and Caio Torres (21). Entered: Hélio (4), Wagner (4), Fred (-), Átila (-), Guto (3) and Teichmann (13).
