In the Clássico dos Milhões, the Nation was the one who left celebrating. With the support of the red-blacks from Manaus at the Arena Amadeu Teixeira, in Manaus (AM), Flamengo defeated Vasco da Gama 94 to 86 on Saturday afternoon (11) and remained in the lead of the NBB CAIXA. Now, the capital of Amazonas will once again host Mengão on April 1st, for the Clássico dos Campeões against Brasília.
With this result, "Mais Querido" achieved its 17th victory in 23 matches (73,9% success rate) and remained firmly at the top of the NBB CAIXA. Vasco da Gama remained in ninth place, with 12 wins in 24 matches (50% success rate).
"At this point in the NBB CAIXA, our focus is on maintaining our lead. A victory like this, in a match like this, is very important. It was great to have both sets of fans there; everyone could feel the heat of the classic. This shows the power of basketball and what it can do throughout Brazil," commented coach José Neto.
The game
The classic on Manaus soil began with Flamengo's superiority, with five accurate 3-pointers, leading 21-12. But still in the first quarter, Vasco closed the gap (25-22) and turned the game around in the second period. After that, the two teams alternated the lead on several occasions, but the club from Gávea went into halftime ahead, 43-41.
But it was in the second half that Flamengo began to build its victory. With a strong performance from Olivinha, who provided a strong presence on offensive rebounds followed by easy balls, coach José Neto's team gradually opened up a lead and, in the final four minutes, had an 11-point lead (84-73) and took a crucial step toward a positive result in Manaus.
