FlaBasquete's debut in the ninth edition of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) promises to be fiery. In a rematch of the NBB8 final, where the Pride of the Nation lifted the trophy and achieved its fourth consecutive championship, José Neto's team will face Bauru, just as they did in the first round of last season. The National Basketball League (LNB) will still define the date of this and other matches according to the season's television broadcast schedule.
There are 16 teams participating in the tournament. Flamengo's opponents will be Basquete Cearense (CE), Vasco (RJ), Mourão Basquete, Bauru (SP), Brasília (DF), Caxias (RS), Franca (SP), Liga Sorocabana (SP), Macaé (RJ), Minas Tênis Clube (MG), Mogi das Cruzes (SP), Paulistano (SP), Pinheiros (SP), Rio Claro (SP) and Vitória (BA).
New features for this season
The NBB (Brazilian Basketball League) regulations have changed for the next edition. The last two teams in the qualifying phase will automatically be relegated to Liga Ouro, the Access Division, in the 2017/2018 season. Fans will also be able to enjoy a classic Rio de Janeiro derby this year against Vasco, who were promoted from the second division to the elite group.

To fight for their sixth Brazilian championship – their fifth consecutive title – FlaBasquete retained Marcelinho, Marquinhos, Olivinha, Rafael Mineiro, JP Batista, Ronald Ramon, and coach José Neto from their squad, and signed Ricardo Fischer, Humberto, Leo Bispo, Lele, and Pedrinho. The last four, who are under 22 years old, will also compete in the Basketball Development League (LDB).

The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo adult basketball team relies on direct funding from its sponsor Estácio, in addition to investments from Tim via the State Sports Incentive Law/State Secretariat for Sports, Leisure and Youth (ICMS).
