Since 2012, basketball has gained an important competition on the national sports calendar. More than just determining the best-equipped team, the Basketball Development League (LDB) has become known for training and revealing new talents in the sport on the national scene, as it is an under-22 tournament. Of the 37 teams that have participated in the LDB, only 9 have been in all four editions, and Flamengo is one of them. With two titles (2011 and 2013), a bronze in 2012 and a silver in 2014 – with 70 wins in 84 games across all editions – the Pride of the Nation is the biggest winner of the competition.

Initially called LDO (Olympic Development League), the tournament revealed athletes from the Flamengo team who now play for the main team, such as Gegê, Felício, Chupeta, Danielzinho, and Mingau.

The LDB (Liga de Desenvolvimento de Basquete - Basketball Development League) serves as an incentive for younger basketball players who, sometimes due to lack of opportunity or support, end up abandoning the sport. Precisely because they understand the importance of championships like this, the Flamengo board invests heavily in youth teams and participation in the League. Gegê, point guard for FlaBasquete, spoke a little about what the tournament means to him. "The LDB is interesting for keeping young players active, since many end up no longer being of youth age and don't have an opportunity in the senior league. In the tournament, they gain visibility, the chance to stand out and end up in an adult club in the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB - Novo Basquete Brasil - Brazilian Basketball League). It was no different for me. I had good performances, played a year at Tijuca and returned to Flamengo. This tournament opens doors. With the LDB growing and young players standing out, they become promising talents for big clubs and help national basketball itself to develop," concluded the player.
