The period without games in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil) was very good for Flamengo. After 11 days of training alone, the Rubro-negro team returned to the court with an important victory over Joinville, 90 x 80, on Friday night (11.03), at Ginásio Ivan Rodrigues, in Joinville. The game was valid for the ninth round of the return leg. Marcelinho was the top scorer with 29 points. Bábby scored 15 and Jefferson scored 11 points.
With this result, Flamengo now has 16 wins in 22 matches (72,73% success rate) and returns to the top of the competition, tied with Pinheiros, who, this Friday (11.03), was defeated by Brasília. In the head-to-head confrontation, the São Paulo team has the upper hand over the Rubro-negro, having won both matches in the qualifying phase.
The Rio quintet returns to the court next Tuesday (15.03), against Franca, at 19 pm, at the Tijuca Tênis Clube Gymnasium.
Encouraged by their fans, who were present at the Santa Catarina gymnasium, Flamengo started off with a bang and with three consecutive baskets from Marcelinho (two of them three-pointers), the team opened up a 13-8 lead. With a strong defense, the advantage reached 11 points: 18-7. In the end, however, the Rubro-negro had a moment of inattention and allowed Joinville to tie the game at 22-22 and close the quarter at 26-22.
In the second quarter, Flamengo dominated the game again and, with three consecutive three-pointers from David Teague, Jefferson and Duda (the first two scored at the end of the first quarter), respectively, the team opened up a 34-26 lead. Defending well, the Rubro-negro team maintained the advantage and went into halftime winning 46-33.
With Marcelinho inspired, the advantage reached 15 points in the third quarter: 60 x 45, which ended with the victory of the Rio team by 67 x 58. In the last part, Joinville came close to closing at 74 x 78. But the red-black defense made the difference and Flamengo closed at 90 x 80.
"It was a very important victory. It's difficult to beat Joinville at home and we were coming off some not-so-good results in
away games. But I think we're finding our best basketball at the ideal time in the competition," said Marcelinho.
Power forward/center Jefferson highlighted the red-blacks' good performance.
"We implemented a strong defense that gave us peace of mind to play on offense. That ended up making the difference," said Jefferson, pleased with his performance. "This time just training did me a lot of good, and now I'm really back," added the center, who recently suffered an adductor injury in his right thigh.
Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (29), Helio (5), Duda (7), Teichmann (7) and Bábby (15). Entered: Teague (7), Fred (8), Jefferson (11), Átila (1), Wagner (-)
