In a thrilling match decided by the final attack, Flamengo let victory slip away in its second game of the Interleague Tournament in Mendoza, Argentina. After a stellar first half, the Red-Black team was defeated by Peñarol (ARG) 82-81 on Saturday night (April 09.04). The team concludes its participation in the competition on Sunday (April 10.04) against Brasília at 19 pm (Brasília time). In the first round, Flamengo lost to Obras Sanitárias.
The Interleague Tournament brings together the top four teams from the NBB qualifying round and the top four from the Argentine League. The Rio de Janeiro team is using the competition as preparation for the national championship playoffs, starting on the 24th.
Without Marcelinho, with a neck injury, and Bábby, with a dislocated shoulder, American David Teague shone, leading scorer of the match with 37 points.
"It was an excellent match, especially because of our improvement compared to the last one. Congratulations to Peñarol on the victory. Now we're going to approach our next game very seriously. We didn't come to Argentina to lose all three games. We're going to look for a win against Brasília," said forward Teichmann, who recorded a double-double (13 points and 12 rebounds).
With a true show from Teague, Flamengo won the first half 47-34. After the break, Peñarol leveled the score and with less than a minute remaining, they took the lead to 80-78. With a three-pointer from Hélio, Flamengo pulled within 82-81. Safar was fouled and missed both free throws. With five seconds remaining, Flamengo failed to connect on their final attack.
