In a thrilling game, decided in overtime, Flamengo was defeated by Pinheiros 84-89, on Monday night (21.11), at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium, in the second round of NBB 4. In normal time, the match ended tied at 75-75. Marquinhos, from Pinheiros, was the top scorer, with 29 points. For Flamengo, Leandrinho was the standout, with 20 points and 10 assists.
Flamengo's next challenge, which now has one win and one loss, will be Thursday (24.11), against Minas, at 20pm, in Belo Horizonte (MG). The team will already be able to count on captain Marcelinho, who served a two-game suspension (Paulistano and Pinheiros), for the confusion in the game against Franca, in the semifinals of the NBB 2010/2011.
Flamengo had a devastating first quarter. With a strong defense, the team took a 10-0 lead. Pinheiros only managed to score their first two points with five minutes remaining. With their offense functioning very well, Flamengo closed the quarter at 30-15. In the second half, Flamengo maintained a 10-point lead until the final minutes, but made a few mistakes and went into halftime leading 44-40.
Pinheiros equalized early in the second half, but two three-pointers from Leandrinho and one from Caio put Flamengo back in front. Flamengo closed the quarter at 70-59. The final period was the most evenly matched, ending tied at 75-75. In overtime, Flamengo wasted a few attacks and ended up losing to Pinheiros 89-84.
"It was a great game, decided by the details, in the final seconds. Pinheiros is a very strong team, a title contender and the current São Paulo champion, so we already knew we would have difficulties. But congratulations to both teams," said Leandrinho.
The team played in mourning for the passing of the club's great benefactor, Col. Antônio Celestino Silveira Brocchi. A minute of silence was observed before the match.
