Protagonists of one of the biggest classics in national basketball today, Flamengo and Brasília face each other this Sunday (17.10), in a friendly match, at 11 am, at the ASCEB gymnasium, in Brasília. The teams decided the NBB in the last two seasons, with one title for each side (Flamengo in 2008/2009 and Brasília in 2009/2010).
Despite being just a warm-up game, the rivalry between the two teams will not be forgotten, especially since Brasília won last year's NBB title.
"Both teams will go in to win, even though it's a friendly. Flamengo vs. Brasília today is a national classic," said Flamengo coach Paulo Chupeta.
The coach recalled the importance of the match in preparing Rubro-negro for the next challenges of the season: the NBB and the first phase of the South American League, between October 27th and 30th, in Santiago Del Estero, Argentina.
"It will be important for us to train with the new rules and also to test some plays and strategies," explained Chupeta.
Flamengo will be without forward/guard Marcelinho for Sunday's game. The player is serving a suspension due to incidents in a match against Joinville on October 4, 2009, during the Ciser Tournament, a friendly competition in Joinville. Marcelinho was suspended by the Supreme Court of Sports Justice (STJD) for five games, and the sentence can be served in any friendly match organized by the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB).
Unlike Brasília, which has yet to make its debut in the 2010/2011 season, Flamengo is competing in the State Championship. The team is undefeated in the competition, with five wins (Iguaçu, Riachuelo, Macaé, Cabo Frio, and Tijuca). Furthermore, it won two friendlies against Vila Velha earlier this month.
