It's not just the adult team that will represent the red-and-black basketball team in tournaments in South America in 2010. While coach Paulo Chupeta's team only begins its fight for the second South American League title on October 28th, the under-15 team, coached by Marcus Vinicius Higino Júnior, known as Marquinhos, leaves on the 26th for Asunción, Paraguay, to compete in the 1st Under-15 Men's Youth Cup.
In addition to Flamengo, five other teams will compete for the title: Siglo 21 and Oberá Tenis Club from Argentina; Colegios Unidos from Chile; and Sol da América and Deportivo San Jose from Paraguay.
The red-and-black team's debut will be on the 27th against the Argentine team Siglos 21, at 17:30 pm. The following day, at 19 pm, the Rio de Janeiro team's opponent will be Obertá. On the 29th, again in the first game of the day, at 17:30 pm, Flamengo will face Chile's Colegio Unidos. In the final two rounds, on the 30th and 31st, respectively, the red-and-black team's opponents will be the home team, San Jose and Sol da América.
André Guimarães, the club's basketball supervisor, is thrilled with the opportunity to represent the country in an international tournament and hopes that the exchange with South American teams can help develop future athletes for the club.
"Just as Flamengo basketball has dominated the sport over the last three years in the senior category, our goal now is to promote as many homegrown players as possible in the youth categories to perhaps see them represent the country at the Rio Olympic Games," explained André, who wants to take advantage of the tournament in Asunción to evaluate the quality of the young Flamengo athletes.
"The Youth Cup will be important for us to evaluate the level of our youth teams in relation to South American countries," he concluded.
