Team wins first title of the season with victory over Tijuca, in Gávea

The cry of "we're champions" echoed for the first time in the 2012/2013 season on the Gávea basketball court. On Wednesday night (11/07), Flamengo won its eighth state championship, after an indisputable victory over Tijuca, 120 x 88, at the Hélio Maurício gymnasium. With the result, the Rubro-negro closed the best-of-three series 2 x 0 (in the first game, on November 05, the team had already won 108 x 79). It was Flamengo's 38th state basketball title and the eighth consecutive (2005 to 2012).
In front of a packed crowd, the team demonstrated its superiority throughout the match. With a solid defense and efficient offense, Flamengo took a 30-17 lead in the first quarter and went into halftime leading 61-39. In the third quarter, the team led by 35 points (87-52) and closed with a 97-56 lead. In the final quarter, they simply managed to hold on to their advantage to close the game at 120-88.
Marcelinho led all scorers with 32 points. Having participated in six of the eight titles, the red-and-black captain couldn't hide his emotion:
"These achievements are the result of a job well done and a strong investment that Flamengo makes in basketball. Each title brings a special feeling. We have a completely revamped team, and this achievement serves to boost the team's morale," said the winger.
It was coach José Neto's first achievement for Flamengo.
"This title is important for the team to feel that the work is bearing fruit, that we're on the right path. It will give the players confidence and security," he explained.
One of the team's reinforcements for the season, wing/point guard Vitor Benite, who started playing in Flamengo's youth academy, was also thrilled with the victory:
"It's a very remarkable feeling to be back at Flamengo as a professional and to win our first title. Especially playing at home. Here, the fans always play along and that's very exciting for those on the court," he celebrated.
Another club reinforcement, Olivinha, who won the title with Flamengo in 2006, recalled that the celebration will be short-lived.
"Of course we're going to celebrate tonight, but tomorrow we have to think about the next competitions, the second phase of the South American League and the NBB," he said.
"I've followed these eight titles, and our goal is to reach ten championships. I believe we will achieve it. We've assembled a strong team, capable of competing for all the titles, and we're starting with the State Championship," said president Patricia Amorim, after presenting the medals to the champions.
Now, Flamengo is preparing for the second phase of the South American League, with the date and location yet to be determined. On November 24.11, Flamengo will debut in the NBB, against Vila Velha, at their opponent's home ground.
