Another trophy is on its way to Gávea. After winning the 2009 South American League in March and the Brazilian Championship (NBB) in June, Flamengo basketball completed the "triple crown" by winning the State Championship this Wednesday night in Rio. Living up to expectations, coach Paulo Chupeta's team defeated Club Municipal 94-59 and claimed their fifth consecutive title in the competition on their opponent's home turf.
There wasn't the tension or nervousness of Sunday, when the soccer team struggled more than expected to lift the championship trophy. Basketball was much easier. The team imposed its game in the first half, winning the first quarter 34-22 and the second 22-08.
With the score at 56-30, the team slowed down and the Tijucan club made it 21-10 in the third quarter, reducing the lead to 66-51. In the final quarter, the team settled in and gave Municipal no chance, scoring 28-08. In the final, Flamengo 94-59 Municipal. The top scorer was point guard Hélio with 21 points, followed by Fred and Duda, both with 12, and Teichmann with 09. For Club Municipal, the highest scorers were Júlio (18) and Diego (17).
"In today's game, the team was more focused, more aggressive, inducing the opponent into mistakes, and opened up an advantage," analyzed coach Paulo Chupeta. His assistant João Batista had the same view. "Today, the attitude was better. Our team was more attentive than in the first game, in which we were very relaxed due to the technical differences between the teams."
For point guard Helio, the title is a golden cap to 2009. "Winning is always good. We managed to set a good pace at the beginning, we had a bit of a slowdown in the third quarter, but we did well in the end. Now we're thinking about the Liga das Américas," Helio told the official website moments before receiving the medal.
Flamengo debuts on Monday, December 14th, in the Liga de las Américas on Isla Margarita, Venezuela. Their opponent will be Capitanes Arecibo of Puerto Rico. The following day, the team faces Mexican side Halcones Rojos. Their final match will be against Venezuela's Espartanos Margarita.
