The lack of chemistry typical of the beginning of the season was Flamengo's biggest rival in a friendly match this Sunday (October 09.10th) in Brasília. In NBA star Leandrinho's first match in the red-and-black jersey, the team ended up defeated by Brasília, 85-82, at the Nilson Nelson gymnasium in Brasília. Marcelinho, with a great performance, was the game's top scorer with 28 points. Leandrinho, who hadn't played since April due to a right wrist injury, finished with 11 points.
It was Flamengo's first national derby of the season. The friendly served as preparation for the South American League and the NBB, both in November. The team took to the court with its new signings: Leandrinho, David Jackson, Kammerichs, Caio Torres, and captain Marcelinho. After a tense first half that ended 48-39 for the home team, the red-and-black team managed to take the lead in the second and even lead nine points at the end of the third quarter (58-67), but was ultimately defeated by Brasília.
Despite the result, Leandrinho did not hide his happiness at returning to the national courts after nine years in the NBA and, especially, at wearing the Flamengo shirt in front of the large number of red-and-black fans who attended the Nilson Nelson.
"Even though we weren't playing at home, the fans showed up and cheered us on, and I was very happy about that. I think it was a good match, a good start to the season for the team. The team was recently assembled, and we're still getting used to each other's game. Of course, I would have liked to have left here with the win, but it was good for us to know what we need to improve on for the next matches," said Leandrinho, who was surprised by the presence of his family—including his daughter Alicia—in the gym. "I didn't know they were coming. It was a very nice surprise for me. I'm living a very special moment," he said.
The player admitted that he felt the lack of rhythm:
"I hadn't played since April because of the injury, and playing in Brazil is very different from playing in the NBA. There's more contact here, and I have to get used to that again. It's also been a while since I played point guard," he said.
For coach Gonzalo Garcia, some defensive aspects still need improvement.
"It was the first national match we played this season. The team started nervously and had ups and downs, especially defensively. The team also lacked a bit of cohesion," he analyzed.
Flamengo started with: Macelinho (28), Leandrinho (11), David Jackson (8), Kammerichs (7) and Caio Torres (18). Entered: Átila (4), Teichmann (-), Hélio (3), Fred (3), Wagner (-) and Guto (-).
