Flamengo's revamped basketball team returns to the court this Monday (October 01.10st) for its first tournament of the 2012/2013 season. The team faces Botafogo at 20 p.m. at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium in the second round of the State Championship. In its debut, the team defeated Riachuelo. Admission is free.
On Friday (05.10), Rubro-negro ends its participation in the first round, against Tijuca, at 20 pm, in Tijuca. Before that, the team from Gávea plays a friendly against the current Brazilian champion, Brasília, on Wednesday (03.10), at 20 pm, in the same place.
In search of its eighth state title, Flamengo is also taking advantage of the competition to gain chemistry and game rhythm for the season's next competitions, the South American League and the NBB.
In 1999, Flamengo and Botafogo decided the state basketball title, with the red-and-black team winning. Coach José Neto, managing a mass-market team for the first time, spoke of his expectations for the match:
"Leading a team with such tradition as Flamengo has been a pleasure and a great challenge. I don't see it as pressure, but rather as a great motivation. We've built a strong team to fight for every title we win. The State Championship is the first step," said José Neto. "I liked the team's attitude in the first game, against Riachuelo, but we can't be satisfied and the goal is to improve with each match," he added.
