The 2012/2013 season started with a victory for Flamengo basketball. In the opening of the State Championship, the reformed team defeated Riachuelo 134 x 39, on Friday night (28.09), at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium. Winger Marquinhos was the top scorer, with 17 points. Vitor Benite scored 16. The Rubro-negro returns to the court next Monday (01.10), against Botafogo, at 20 pm, again in Tijuca.

The match was coach José Neto's first test as head coach of the Rio de Janeiro team. It also marked the debut of reinforcements Marquinhos, Vitor Benite, Kojo, Olivinha, Shilton, and Gegê, signed for the season. Players from the U-22 team, Feliz, Douglas, Diego, and Alexandre, were also included. Center Caio Torres, recovering from an injury, will not compete in the competition. He tore ligaments in his left big toe.

The coach took the opportunity to test various formations and plays during the match. Flamengo had no trouble securing the victory. The quarter-final scores were: 37-04; 69-16; 99-29; and 134-39.

"It was a good start, but the team is still adapting. We played against a technically weaker team, hence the large difference in the score. I liked the team's attitude, but we can't be satisfied. The goal is to improve with each game," said coach José Neto.

Next Wednesday (October 03.10rd), Flamengo will play its first friendly match in preparation for the South American League, at the end of October. The team will face Brasília, at 20 pm, at Tijuca Tênis Clube. Entry will be 1 kg of non-perishable food.

Flamengo started with: Gegê (11), Benite (16), Feliz (9), Marquinhos (17) and Shilton (8). Entered: Marcelinho (14), Duda (15), Kojo (5), Olivinha (14), Diego (7), Alexandre (12) and Douglas (6)
