Flamengo began its journey in the 2010-2011 New Basketball Brazil season with a victory this Wednesday (17.11). With a great performance by Marcelinho Machado, who scored 28 points, the Rubro-Negro defeated Vila Velha 90-70 at the Tartarugão gymnasium in Espírito Santo. Despite missing center Wagner, forward Duda, and point guard Hélio, the team from Gávea achieved this important victory. Teichmann, with 20 points, and Bábby, with 17 points, also stood out. Flamengo's next challenge is at home, Sunday (21.11), against Vitória. Hélio and Wagner return to the team for the match, which will be played at the HSBC Arena, at 11 am.

Flamengo took the court without four players: point guard Hélio, shooting guard Duda, and power forwards Jefferson and Wagner, are serving suspensions for the altercation in the third game of last season's NBB final against Brasília in Brasília. The score was even throughout the first half. In the first quarter, Flamengo took a five-point lead (11-6). Vila Velha came back to 14-15, but Flamengo ended the quarter at 22-19. In the second quarter, Flamengo took a five-point lead again (24-19), but couldn't hold on to the lead. Vila Velha came back late in the game (38-40), but a three-pointer by Marcelinho gave Flamengo a 41-40 lead at halftime.

The second half started off tight, but Flamengo tightened its defense and, midway through the third quarter, took a 14-point lead (58-45). Flamengo closed the period at 68-56. Capitalizing on counterattack opportunities, Flamengo dominated the final quarter. With four minutes remaining, the team was up 16 points, 76-60. Then, it was just a matter of holding on to the lead and winning 90-70.

"The team performed very well. Even though we were already playing in the State Championship and the South American League, there's always an extra sense of anticipation for the debut. The game was very even in the first half, but from the third quarter onwards, Flamengo knew how to take advantage of their more consistent defense to open up an advantage," said Marcelinho.

Winger Teichmann also praised the team's attitude.

"Despite playing without four starters, the team did very well and a win in the debut is always important," said the winger.

Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (28), Guto (11), Fred (14), Teichmann (20) and Bábby (17). Entered: Átila (-), F. Duarte (-), Guilherme (-).
