Flamengo maintained its winning streak in the State Basketball Championship. On Wednesday night (10.11), the team defeated Cabo Frio, 96 x 52, at the Municipal Club gymnasium, and achieved its eighth consecutive victory in the competition. In search of its sixth championship, the Rubro-negro returns to the court this Thursday (11.11), against Iguaçu, at 20:30 pm, at Municipal.
Marcelinho, once again, was the game's top scorer, with 36 points. Bábby, another inspired day, scored 27.
In addition to point guard Duda (sprained right ankle) and power forward Jefferson (adductor injury in his right thigh), who are recovering from injuries suffered during the first stage of the South American League, Flamengo was without point guard Hélio, who suffered from athlete's foot. However, just like in the first round, when they beat Cabo Frio 80-50, Flamengo had no problems in the match.
In the first quarter, Marcelinho managed to break free from the marking and converted five three-pointers (three of them in a row) and the team opened up a 40-11 lead. In the second quarter, led by Bábby, the Rubro-negro team reached a 37-point lead (49-12). Committing counterattack errors, Flamengo allowed Cabo Frio to score nine points in a row, but the home team soon regained its focus and went into halftime leading 53-23.
In the second half, Flamengo didn't let their opponent play. Newcomers Marcelão (under-18), Guilherme (under-18), Ricardo (under-18), and Luiz (under-18) all had their chances, and Flamengo maintained a 30-point lead. With two minutes remaining, the lead reached 42 points (91-49). Flamengo then easily closed out the game at 96-52.
"It was a very good match. Cabo Frio has a team that could have played a tough game, but our posture, especially defensively, made the match easy for us. We played well from the first minute," said shooting guard Marcelinho, praising the newcomers on the court. "They didn't let the standard drop," he stated.
Wednesday's game was the first in a series of three that Flamengo will play in five days. After facing Iguaçu on Thursday, the team has another challenge on Sunday (November 14.11), against Tijuca, at 11 am, at Tijuca Tênis Clube. The match will be part of the club's 115th anniversary celebrations on the 15th. On the occasion, there will be a raffle for fans and a performance by children from the social project Cultura na Cesta.
Flamengo started with Marcelinho (36), Guto (8), Fred (11), Wagner (6) and Bábby (27). Entered: Átila (2), Teichmann (4), Guilherme (1), Marcelão (-), Ricardo (1) and Luiz (-).
