The six-time Rio de Janeiro champion prevailed in the duel with the current São Paulo champion. On Sunday morning (January 23.01), Flamengo crushed Limeira 113-67 at the HSBC Arena, reaching their eighth victory in ten games in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil) and maintaining their lead in the competition. Center Bábby was the top scorer of the match, with 29 points and 12 rebounds (double-double). Marcelinho and American David Teague also had great performances, with 25 points each.
This Monday (24.01), Flamengo heads to the interior of São Paulo, where they will have two more challenges next week: on 25.01, against Araraquara and on 27.01, against Franca.
In addition to Wagner, who is recovering from a meniscus injury in his left knee, the team was also without Jefferson for Sunday's game. The power forward/center felt pain again in the adductor muscle of his right thigh and, by decision of the medical department, will miss the next few games for treatment.
Flamengo started much better than in the match against São José, last Friday (21.01), and dominated the entire first half. With a consistent game and a great performance by Bábby (who finished the first half with 20 points), the Rubro-negro closed the first quarter winning 32 x 20. In the second quarter, Limeira threatened a comeback: 36 x 31. But Flamengo opened up again and went into the break with a 22-point advantage: 58 x 36.
In the second half, the Flamengo massacre continued: 90-54 was the third-quarter score. In the final quarter, Flamengo opened up a 44-point lead (102-58). With the score so tight, coach Gonzalo Garcia brought on newcomers Fred Duarte, known as Varejinho, to a standing ovation from the fans, and Marcelão. And the team did not disappoint, winning 113-67.
"I think the team has started to adapt to coach Gonzalo Garcia's style. Not just me, but all the players were happy today," said Bábby, admitting he hadn't expected such a resounding victory. "We defended well and played very focused on our objective," he concluded.
"We went in with a lot of respect for our opponent, even though we knew they were missing some players. But we played well and did our job," said coach Gonzalo Garcia.
Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (25), Helio (8), Teague (25), Teichmann (8) and Bábby (29). Entered: Fred (4), Átila (6), Guto (5), Duda (-), Fred Duarte (2) and Marcelão (1).
