Flamengo suffered its first defeat in the New Basketball Brazil. After easily defeating Cetaf and Saldanha da Gama, both at the HSBC Arena, the team was defeated this Sunday morning by Joinville (72-69), in a match for the third round of the National Basketball League championship.
Even before the game began, it was clear it wouldn't be easy. Spectators were cursing Marcelinho Machado, following an incident at the Ciser Tournament last month in a packed Ivan Rodrigues gymnasium. But Flamengo started well. With good defense, the team controlled the score for much of a very even first quarter, ending 22-21 to Flamengo. The standout performer was Marcelinho himself, who scored three baskets from the three-point line.
After the second quarter, however, the red-and-black team lost its way on the court. The home team capitalized on an inspired performance by Thiagão—the game's top scorer with 27 points—to score 21 points to Flamengo's six. The first half ended 42-28. Irritated, coach Paulo Chupeta complained to the referee, who had called three technical fouls in favor of the home team.
In the third quarter, the Gávea team came back with a different approach. They adjusted their defense and gradually closed the gap, scoring 25 points and conceding 16. The deficit was reduced to just five points (58-53 in Joinville's favor), with the opposing center being ruled out of the game for five individual fouls.
In the final quarter, Flamengo continued to dominate, and after a strong counterattack featuring a dunk by Teichmann, who had been benched due to a suspension (four individual fouls), Flamengo finally closed the gap (Joinville 63-61) and even had a free throw for the number 21. However, confirming the team's poor free throw shooting, Teichmann missed. From then on, the home team opened up a solid lead, which was not shaken by a last-second basket.
