Flamengo defeated Riachuelo, 110 x 59, on Monday night (15.10), at Tijuca Tênis Clube, in the opening of the second round of the State Basketball Championship. The next match will be on Wednesday (17.10), against Botafogo, at 20 pm, at the same venue. As it has won the four games it has played so far, Flamengo is already mathematically qualified for the finals (the two best-placed teams qualify).

The tournament is serving as preparation for the first phase of the South American League, from October 23 to 25, in Mar Del Plata (ARG), and for the NBB, starting in November.

Flamengo had two players missing against Riachuelo. Center Caio Torres is still recovering from a ligament injury in his left big toe. He is expected to return to the court next Friday (October 19.10) against Tijuca. Point guard Kojo suffered an abdominal strain during training last Sunday and is undergoing treatment.

Unlike the first-round match, Flamengo faced greater resistance from its opponent in the first half. After closing the first quarter at 30-17, Flamengo went into halftime leading 48-37. In the second half, Flamengo forced the defense and opened up a 30-point lead (73-43). The third quarter ended 81-46. The lead increased to 41 points in the final quarter (91-50), and Flamengo ended up winning 110-59.

"They started better today, and we didn't have good finishing in the first half. From the second half onwards, we improved defensively and launched more counterattacks," said coach José Neto. "Regardless of already being qualified for the final, we'll continue to play seriously, as if it were our first match," he added.

Flamengo started with: Gegê (3), Benite (13), Marcelinho (19), Marquinhos (16) and Shilton (10) Entered: Duda (18), Olivinha (14), Feliz (7) Diego (2), Chupeta (3), Douglas (5) and Alexandre (-).
