Flamengo suffers defeat, but remains at the top of the NBB
The team is beaten by Uberlândia away from home (89 x 68) and now faces São José on Friday

Flamengo suffered its second defeat in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil), but maintained its lead in the competition. Playing away from home, the team was defeated by Uberlândia 89-68 on Tuesday night (January 18.01) at Uberlândia Tênis Clube (UTC). The red-and-black team has six wins in eight games. Robert Day, from the Minas Gerais team, was the top scorer with 22 points. For the red-and-black team, Marcelinho scored 17.
Flamengo now has two home matches. On Friday, the team faces São José at 20 p.m. at the HSBC Arena, and on Sunday, the team faces the reigning São Paulo champion, Limeira, at 11 a.m. at the same venue.
Flamengo played without forward/center Wagner, who suffered a medial meniscus injury in his left knee during the team's first training session in the Liga de las Américas in Ecuador. He will undergo arthroscopy next week and is expected to be sidelined for four to five weeks. Meanwhile, the team welcomed back Jefferson, who had been out of action for four matches due to a right adductor injury. The forward/center completed 100 games for Flamengo.
"It's a great joy to reach this milestone; it means a lot to me. Unfortunately, it was a loss. Uberlândia started the match very well. What matters is that we remain in the lead and now we have two home games to recover," said Jefferson.
After taking a 4-2 lead, Flamengo let Uberlândia make it 7-6. But that was the only time the home team had a lead in the first half. Flamengo dominated the match in the first two quarters, despite never leading by more than seven points (33-26 in the second quarter). The first quarter was 13-11 for Flamengo. The advantage remained at two points at the end of the second quarter: 35-33 for the Rio de Janeiro team.
With the UTC gymnasium completely packed, the Minas Gerais team took a 45-37 lead in the third quarter. The lead grew to 15 points (56-41) and ended at 18 for the home team: 70-52. In the final quarter, Flamengo was unable to recover and ended up losing 89-68.
"Defeats away from home are predictable, but we remain in the lead and will do everything possible to stay at the top," concluded Marcelinho.
