Flamengo suffered its fourth defeat in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil) on Wednesday night (February 09.02). Playing away from home, the team was defeated by Minas Gerais 78-69 at Arena Vivo in Belo Horizonte. The Rubro-negro team now has nine wins in 13 games and is in third place in the overall standings, with a 69,23% success rate. Pinheiros and Brasília are tied for the lead, also with four losses, but with two more games than Flamengo.
Still without Jefferson, who is recovering from an adductor injury in his right thigh, the team felt the strain of the marathon of Liga das Américas and NBB matches. Despite the negative result, the match's top scorer was David Teague, with 27 points. Marcelinho scored 20.
Flamengo heads to Vitória this Thursday (10.02), where they will face Vila Velha, on Friday (11.02), at 20 pm, and Vitória, on Sunday (13.02), at 11 am. Both matches are already valid for the second round of the NBB. In the first, Flamengo beat both opponents, by 90 x 70 and 112 x 58, respectively.
"We're coming off a long run of games and some players are playing with sacrifice," said wing/guard Marcelinho.
Minas opened up a 4-0 lead, but Flamengo, with a strong defense, quickly came back and held the lead throughout the first quarter. Flamengo went up 19-12 and closed the quarter at 22-19. In the second quarter, the home team took the lead and, while leading 32-31, scored eight consecutive points, opening up a 40-31 lead. At the end of the first half, Flamengo scored two more points and went into halftime trailing 40-33.
Minas Gerais' lead reached 11 points at the start of the third quarter: 44-33. But Flamengo nailed its defense, and Minas Gerais couldn't finish its attacks. With six consecutive points from Marcelinho, two from Hélio, and two from Tegue, Minas Gerais took the lead: 52-50. In the end, a three-pointer from Minas Gerais tied the fourth quarter at 56-56.
In the last quarter, Flamengo was unable to impose its rhythm and allowed Minas to dominate the scoreboard and win 78 x 69.
"We weren't able to impose our rhythm and scored only 69 points, a very low score for our team," said forward/guard Duda.
Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (20), Helio (9), Teichmann (3), Teague (27) and Bábby (8). Entered: Duda (-), Átila (2), Wagner (-) and Fred (-).
