Nothing beats one day after another. After losing their Group C debut in the South American Basketball League, Flamengo bounced back with a solid victory over Uruguay's Malvin, who had played hard against Quimsa, the home team, in the first round. On Wednesday night, coach Paulo Chupeta's team put on a strong third-quarter performance, winning 95-73. Highlights included Marcelinho, Helio, and Duda, who scored 28, 24, and 22 points, respectively.
After a very complicated first half, where the red-black team left the Santiago Del Estero gymnasium losing 37 to 34, the team from Gávea showed the basketball that makes them the current South American champion and two-time Brazilian champion and massacred their opponent in the second half of the game: they won the third quarter 30 to 19 and the last 31 to 17, closing the match at 95 to 73.
Marcelinho led all scorers with 28 points and eight rebounds. His brother, Duda, scored 22 and had seven assists. One difference between this match and Flamengo's debut was the rebounds. Center Wagner excelled, dominating the paint and grabbing 13. With this result, Flamengo remains in contention for a spot in the Final Four, but their mission isn't easy: they must hope for a Defensor loss to Malvin and also overcome Quimsa, who are struggling after last season's final. The final round of this South American League qualifying round takes place on Thursday night.
