Less than a week after losing to Brasília in the South American League final, Flamengo returned to winning ways. The Rubro-negro defeated Assis 77-91 on Friday night (December 03.12) at the Jairão gymnasium in Assis, maintaining its unbeaten run in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil). The team has three wins in three games and returns to the court on Sunday (December 05.12) against Bauru at 11 am in Bauru.
Marcelinho led all scorers with 39 points. The team, seeking its second consecutive championship title, was without center Bábby, who sprained his right ankle in the first match of the League's final stage and played the entire competition struggling.
In Friday's game, Assis took the lead, opening up a 9-6 lead, but Flamengo equalized, and the game remained even at 14-14. With Hélio and Wagner replacing Duda and Átila, respectively, Flamengo improved. Two consecutive three-pointers from Marcelinho put Flamengo ahead: 20-15, and the Rio de Janeiro team ended the quarter with a 24-18 lead.
Marcelinho was the standout performer in the first half, with 25 points. In the second quarter, he hit two more three-pointers, which helped extend the Rubro-Negro's lead. The team went into halftime leading 49-35.
After leading 16 points (51-35) early in the second half, Flamengo lost focus and allowed Assis to score 12 straight points, making it 47-53. But a three-pointer from Hélio gave Flamengo the upper hand. The third quarter ended with Flamengo leading 64-53.
In the final quarter, Flamengo managed its lead well, which varied between 9 and 16 points. In the end, it was 91-77 for Flamengo.
"We're coming off a strong run of games in the South American League and this victory is a bit of a relief, as this team doesn't like to lose," said coach Paulo Chupeta.
For Marcelinho, the good performance is a reward for his dedication.
"I always go on the court ready to give my best. Some days things work out, others don't. But today the team played well, had a solid defense, and that helped us win. Now our focus is all on the NBB," he said.
Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (39), Fred (7), Duda (-), Teichmann (10) and Átila (6). Entered: Hélio (8), Wagner (6), Jefferson (13), Guto (2) and Fred Duarte (-).
