Flamengo defeated Araraquara, 97 x 72, on Wednesday night (16.02), at the HSBC Arena, in Rio, and maintained the leadership of the NBB (Novo Basquete Brasil), with 12 wins in 16 games. The match was valid for the return leg of the competition. Flamengo, which until the beginning of the round was in second place, already entered the court at the top of the table, since Pinheiros, which was in first place, was defeated last Tuesday (the São Paulo team has five losses, against four for Flamengo).

Point guard Marcelinho and forward Teichmann led the red-black victory, with 26 and 22 points, respectively. Later this week, the red-black team will have two more challenges in Rio: Friday (February 18.02), against Assis, at 20.02 pm, and Sunday (February 20), against Bauru, at 12 pm. Both games will be at the HSBC Arena.

This Wednesday, Flamengo played without American David Teague. The player fell and hit his back on the backboard in the match against Vitória last Sunday in Vitória, and was still in a lot of pain. The team was also without power forward/center Jefferson, who is recovering from an adductor injury in his right thigh. He is expected to return to the court for the match against Brasília on February 23.02.

The first quarter was evenly matched, with both teams taking turns leading until Flamengo closed the quarter at 26-24. In the second, however, the Red-Blacks reinforced their defense and took the lead, eventually opening up a 20-point lead (49-29). The Rio de Janeiro team went into halftime leading 51-36.

In the third quarter, Flamengo continued to impose its rhythm. Early on, the lead reached 25 points (71-46) and ended at 28: 79-51. With a good variety of plays, coach Gonzalo Garcia had the luxury of putting three rookies on the court: Fred Duarte, known as Varejinho, Gege (both 19), and the young Max. The team only had to hold the lead until the end: 97-72.

"I really liked the team's offensive power, their passing game, and their shot selection," said Gonzalo Garcia, pleased with the result. "I leave the court happy with the win and satisfied with the work we're doing," he added.

Center Wagner also praised the team's performance.
"We defended well and hit the counterattacks, I think that made the difference," he said.

Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (26), Helio (8), Duda (7), Teichmann (22) and Bábby (15). Entered: Fred (2), Guto (-), Átila (9), Wagner (2), Fred Duarte (2), Gege (-) and Max (4).
