In a thrilling match, decided in the final seconds and featuring a broken table, Flamengo defeated Mavort (EQU) 81-80 in their second match of the first phase of the Liga das Américas, in Ibarra, Ecuador. With the result, the Rubro-negro team came very close to qualifying for the second phase of the tournament, considered one of the most important on the continent. This Thursday (January 13.01), the Rio de Janeiro team faces Español (CHI) at 21 pm Brasília time. Next, Quimsa (ARG) faces Mavort.
Two teams advance to the next stage. Flamengo has two wins (they beat the Argentines in their debut), Quimsa and Español have one each. Mavort is already eliminated from the competition.
Once again, Flamengo was without Jefferson and Wagner, who were injured. American Walker, from Mavort, led the way with 32 points. For Flamengo, American David Teague scored 25.
Flamengo started the game better, imposing its own rhythm and taking a 16-8 lead. Encouraged by its fans and the Americans Walker and Jackson, Mavort took advantage of a moment of inattention from the Red-Blacks to tie the game at 16-16. Flamengo, however, scored seven straight points and closed the quarter at 23-16. In the second quarter, Flamengo took a 27-24 lead, but the Ecuadorians hit numerous three-pointers and erased the advantage. The first half ended 43-38 for the home team.
In the third quarter, Flamengo tied the score at 47-47 in the most tense play of the night. Bábby received the free ball and, as he dunked, the glass on the backboard shattered, scattering shards across the court. No one was hurt, and it took organizers about half an hour to replace the backboard. Upon returning, Mavort led 58-53. American David Teague tied the score with a three-pointer. Átila then put the team from Gávea ahead: 60-58. The quarter ended 66-64 for Flamengo. The final quarter was evenly matched, with both teams alternating in front. In the end, Flamengo pushed hard on defense and secured the 81-80 victory.
"Mavort played a great game, they were a completely different team from the first match, and we had a bit of an unlucky night in defense. But in the end, the result was positive," explained Flamengo's coach, Argentine Gonzalo Garcia, who remains undefeated in charge of the team (three wins in three games).
Winger Teichmann, in turn, said he was already expecting a difficult match against the home team.
"We knew Mavort was going to make things difficult for us. They were coming off a loss (to Español) and were playing with the support of the fans. I think we failed defensively at times, but I'm very happy with the result," said Teichmann, who scored 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds (double-double).
Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (22), Helio (-), David Teague (25), Teichmann (13) and Bábby (11). Entered: Fred (2), Átila (6), Guto (2), Duda (0)
