In their toughest match yet in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil), Flamengo defeated Bauru 81-80 and maintained their lead in the competition with a 100% record. So far, the red-and-black team has four wins in four matches. American Larry led all scorers with 23 points. For Flamengo, Hélio scored 22. But the name of the game was point guard Fred, who converted a three-pointer with just seconds remaining, securing Flamengo's victory.
Rubro-negro returns to the court on Tuesday (12/07), in the first match of the State semifinals, against Cabo Frio, at 8 pm, at the Tijuca Tênis Clube Gymnasium. The following day, the two teams will face each other again, at the same time, in Cabo Frio. The next challenge for the NBB will be on Sunday (12/12), against Pinheiros, at 3 pm, in Tijuca, with broadcast on Sportv.
Still without center Bábby, who is recovering from a sprained right ankle, Flamengo struggled in the first half. The home team took a 2-7 lead early in the first quarter. Flamengo took a 10-9 lead, and the game remained even. But a series of wasted counterattacks allowed Bauru to regain the lead and close the quarter at 15-18.
Flamengo took the lead early in the second quarter (21-18). Once again, attacking errors and some defensive lapses hurt the Rio de Janeiro team, and the São Paulo team opened up a six-point lead (26-32). With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Hélio converted a three-pointer, and Flamengo took the lead (37-36). On the next attack, Bauru also hit a three-pointer and went into halftime leading 37-39.
In the second half, Flamengo tightened its defense, managed to close the gap, and turned the game around to 46-45 with a three-pointer from Jefferson. After that, the match remained evenly matched, with both teams alternating the lead. Flamengo ended the quarter ahead: 64-61.
In the final quarter, the Rio de Janeiro team took an eight-point lead (72-64). Bauru threatened again when Átila missed two free throws and Alex then converted a three-pointer (76-78). The game remained tied until the end, and in the final seconds, with Bauru leading 80-78, Fred hit a game-winning basket that sealed Fla's 81-80 victory.
"Bauru is a great team, with a great coach, Guerrinha, and he really appreciated our victory. But we also have a very strong group, and when one player isn't playing well, we have others to replace him," analyzed coach Paulo Chupeta.
"It was a victory of race, of overcoming", summarized the point guard Hélio
