On Saturday night (February 15.02), in Quito, Ecuador, Flamengo maintained its 100% record in the first phase of the League of the Americas, beating Mavort, the home team, 109-105 in overtime. The highlight for Flamengo was Marcelinho, who left the court as Flamengo's top scorer, with 29 points and 11 rebounds. As the first two teams in the group will advance to the second phase, Mais Querido, leader of group D with two wins, can advance in the competition even with a loss to Leones de Quilpue this Sunday (February 16.02).
Flamengo started the match with a bang. Marcelinho hit a beautiful three-pointer on his first shot, and within seconds, Flamengo already led 8-0. Mavort fought back and closed the gap, but the first quarter ended with Flamengo ahead 27-23, with Marquinhos scoring 11 points. In the second quarter, José Neto showed he's also very well-placed on the bench. He brought on Shilton, Gegê, and Cristiano Felício, who combined for seven points and helped Flamengo go into halftime with a 50-46 lead.
The third quarter began much the same way as the first: a fantastic three-pointer from Marcelinho. Although Flamengo took the lead, the two teams were evenly matched in the first half of the second half. So much so that Flamengo's four-point lead remained at the end of the third quarter: 72-68. In the final quarter, the drama took over. With both teams playing exceptionally well, the score became very tight, and Flamengo was leading 100-97 with less than two seconds remaining. It was at this moment that an incredible moment occurred: Walker, from Mavort, hit a three-pointer from just before halftime, sending the match into overtime.
In overtime, Flamengo didn't face any challenges and played a very confident game. During the five minutes of play, the red-and-black team scored nine points and conceded only five. Thus, the "Mais Querido" (The Most Beloved) closed the match 109-105.
"It was a game where we knew Mavort would come for all or nothing and they were a dangerous team. They played very well, but I'm happy with the victory because we have a spirited team that didn't give up and went after the objective. Of course, we have to correct things we failed to do, and we will do so, but the important thing is that we continue to depend solely on our team to advance to the next stage. We've already focused on coming out with a victory on Sunday against Leones of Chile, who have already shown themselves to be a well-organized team in this competition," said José Neto, the team's coach.
Flamengo will end its participation in the first phase of the League of the Americas this Sunday (16.02). Once again in Quito, headquarters of group D, at 20 pm (Brasília time), the red-blacks will face the Chileans from Leones de Quilpue.
