For the ninth time in 2014, Flamengo took to the court and emerged victorious, maintaining its 100% record for the year. On Thursday night (January 30.01), at Tijuca Tênis Clube, the victim was Palmeiras, who were defeated 84-76. With the result, the Mais Querido reached 11 consecutive unbeaten matches and remained in the lead of the sixth edition of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB). For the second consecutive game, Marcelinho, this time with 21 points, was the top scorer for the red-black team.
"It was worth it because we were able to physically withstand Palmeiras. We already knew and were prepared for the game, especially considering their physical condition. We performed our role well. We're finding a better rhythm, with the players finding their positions. Players like Marquinhos and Washam, who are returning, are adapting to the team's rhythm. It's an important moment, in which our player rotation helps us improve in matches," explained coach José Neto.
Besides Marcelinho, other red-and-black players posted strong individual performances. Olivinha scored 17 points and, if he had grabbed one more rebound, would have left the court with a double-double. Argentine Laprovittola scored ten points and dished out five assists, and Meyinsse, with 12 points, made almost every shot he attempted. The American, with his sharp aim, only missed one two-point shot.
"The match was very even. Our team finished the first half behind. Neto gave us a wake-up call in the locker room and asked us to improve our defense, which was a bit tricky. We did, and in the final quarter, we opened up a lead and managed to come away with the win. I tried to help the team as best I could, and I think I played a good game," said Olivinha.
Next Saturday (01.02), at 19:15 pm, Flamengo will play again at Tijuca Tênis Clube. The game, valid for the 22nd round of the NBB, will be against Pinheiros.
