Flamengo finished the first round of the State Basketball Championship with a 100% record. On Wednesday night (13.10/109), the team secured its fifth consecutive victory in the competition by defeating Tijuca 101-41 at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium. Forward/point guard Marcelinho was the top scorer and the standout performer of the match, with XNUMX points.
Rubro-negro returns to the court next Thursday (21.10), against Riachuelo, for the return leg of the State Championship. Before that, however, they will play a friendly match against Brasília, on Sunday (17.10), at 11 am, at the opponent's home.
Flamengo's toughest match of the competition so far, Paulo Chupeta's team had its ups and downs against Tijuca. They started focused, taking a 17-2 lead in the first quarter. But a timeout from Tijuca, which boasts experienced players Olívia and Ricardinho, interrupted the team's good run. Late in the first half, Tijuca pulled within 47-48, but two three-pointers from Marcelinho sent the team into the break with a 54-47 lead.
Flamengo returned for the second half better positioned and closed the third quarter winning 90 x 71. In the fourth quarter, Flamengo opened up a 20-point lead (103 to 83), but ended up letting Tijuca close in at the end: 109 to 101.
"Flamengo lost concentration at times. But we'll learn from this match and talk about it," said coach Paulo Chupeta.
Top scorer of the match, Marcelinho agreed with the coach:
"From the start, the team left a lot to be desired defensively. At a national level, we wouldn't win a match by letting the opponent score 101 points," added the player, who had a stellar performance: "I try to help the team with what I do best, but I'm trying to put into practice what I train defensively."
