He's only 22 years old and not one of the tallest players in the sport he plays. But, at 6'2", Gegê is one of the main names on Flamengo's basketball team and a player on the Brazilian Young Players' National Team. This Saturday (July 20), the point guard arrived in Brazil after playing two friendlies with the team in France and the Kazan Universiade in Russia, a competition in which Brazil finished eighth.
"It was great! Playing for Brazil was one of the best experiences possible. We could have gone a little further, but the experience was unique. Now I'll keep working so that playing for the national team becomes a routine," said the red-and-black point guard.
While his body rests and tries to readjust to the Brazilian time zone, Gegê's mind is already focused on the challenges ahead for Flamengo. As he's still old enough to play in the Brazilian Development League, the point guard will help Paulo Chupeta's team maintain its 100% record in the competition starting in August. As for the Mais Querido adult team, Gegê will pursue two major goals.
"Defending a title (Novo Basquete Brasil) is always great. So, this season, the responsibility increases for us. Everyone knows the power of our team and I'm sure we'll give our all to seek our third NBB championship and win the Liga das Américas, which would be very important because it's a first," said Gegê.
