After agreeing to a one-year contract with coach Paulo Chupeta, Flamengo's board renewed the contracts of Hélio and Wagner. Stars in the campaign that led the red-and-black team to its third consecutive national final, the point guard and center received several offers but opted to sign with the Rio de Janeiro club for two more seasons. Happy with the outcome of the negotiations, basketball director Arnaldo Szpiro celebrated the agreement with the duo and ensured an even more competitive team for the upcoming season.
"They were two important players this season, who improved tremendously and were therefore highly valued. But fortunately, they accepted our offer and will continue with us for the next two years. But we're not stopping here. Our intention is to renew practically the entire squad and also reinforce ourselves with one or two players from the Brazilian national team," said Arnaldo Szpiro.
One of the key players responsible for leading Flamengo to its third consecutive national final, Hélio was one of the Flamengo players called up to the Brazilian national team and, consequently, one of the most sought-after by other clubs. With offers from Uberlândia, Pinheiros, and Limeira, the player took into account the excellent atmosphere within the group and the board's promise to build an even stronger team for the 2010/2011 season to remain in Rio de Janeiro.
"I actually had some good offers, but I chose to stay at Flamengo for two more seasons because I know we'll have a very competitive team next season. The salary issue and the fact that I've already adapted to the club and know the other players well also played a role," explained Hélio.
"I'm happy that clubs like Franca, São José, and Fluminense have shown interest in signing me, but I really wanted to stay at Flamengo. Fortunately, I reached an agreement and will remain at Gávea for another two years," Wagner said excitedly.
