Willing to regain its dominance in national basketball, Flamengo continues to strengthen itself. After agreeing to the return of center Baby and renewing the contracts of coach Paulo Chupeta and the entire coaching staff; point guards Fred and Hélio; forward Duda; power forward Guilherme Teichmann; center Wagner, and captain Marcelinho, who extended his contract until 2012, last Monday (05.07) it was Jefferson's turn to agree to stay with the Rubro-Negro for another season.
Having played for Flamengo since 2008, the player celebrated the positive outcome of the negotiations. Despite receiving several offers to leave the club, Jefferson acknowledges that the quality of the team and the positive atmosphere with his teammates played a significant role in his decision.
"I'm very happy to have reached an agreement. The renewal took a while to happen, but that was my wish from the beginning. I identified with the club and the fans, and I'm well-adapted to Rio de Janeiro. I had a few inquiries about leaving, but the only concrete offers were from São José and an Angolan team. The Angolan team's offer was even better than Flamengo's, but I didn't want to leave Brazil. Being close to my family and fully adapted to the club was a factor," explained the club's number 18.
Outside of the list of Argentine coach Rubén Magnano, who leads the Brazilian national team, for the South American Championship in Colombia, from July 26 to 31, and the World Cup in Turkey, from August 28 to September 12, Jefferson also believes that his stay in Rio de Janeiro could accelerate his return to the green-yellow team.
"The fact that Flamengo is strengthening itself and building a great team to win all the competitions we'll be competing in this season also played a role. Not to mention that at Flamengo, my chances of being recalled to the Brazilian national team are much greater," Jefferson said.
