The reigning two-time national champion, Flamengo, returned to winning ways in the 2009/2010 edition of the Novo Basquete Brasil. Coming off two losses (to Joinville and Londrina), the Rubro-Negro took advantage of Jefferson's excellent return from injury for over a month to defeat São José 85-61 in São Paulo and bounce back in the competition. Flamengo led the way with 18 points, while Marcelinho scored 21.

From the moment the ball was kicked off in São José dos Campos, Flamengo took control of the match. Despite the marathon of games and playing away from home, coach Paulo Chupeta's team gave the home team no chance. In the first quarter, they only opened up a three-point lead (16-13), but in the following quarter, the team played freely and the lead only widened. With strong performances from Jefferson and Marcelinho, with 11 and nine points, respectively, the reigning two-time national champions went into the locker room leading 40-24.

Returning from the locker room, Flamengo didn't let the pace drop. Even with Jefferson and Marcelinho on the bench, Paulo Chupeta's elite supporting players did their part. It was Coloneze and Teichmann's turn to take charge. Dominating the paint, one reached 13 and the other 10 points, giving Flamengo a 63-39 lead and a comfortable lead heading into the final quarter. With "Jé" back on the court, but with most of the reserves playing to regain their rhythm, Flamengo was left to manage their advantage and close out the score at 85-61.

The victory leaves the Gávea team with three wins and two losses in five NBB matches. The red-and-blacks' next match, however, isn't in the national competition, but in the Rio de Janeiro State Championship. Flamengo hosts Cabo Frio on Monday at 18 p.m. at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium, continuing the postponed match from last Wednesday, when a power outage prevented the first leg of the semifinals from continuing. The score was 31-18 for Mengão.
