Today, they were in control. So were the fans. Arena Carioca, which had hosted FlaBasquete so well, had a different color this Saturday. But the finish was no different. Controlling the game from the opening minute, Flamengo showed they knew their place well and secured their eighth consecutive victory in the NBB, defeating Vasco 89-75, further strengthening their lead with an 86,6% shooting percentage and 26 points. Tied at 15 points, MJ Rhett and Arthur Pecos finished as the game's top scorers. The American also grabbed four rebounds, while Pecos had five assists. Marquinhos (14 points, three rebounds, and three assists) and David Cubillán (13 points, four assists, and three rebounds) also stood out in the match. Flamengo returns to action on Thursday, the 01st, against Campo Mourão, at Arena Carioca.
Flamengo opened the scoring early on. JP and Ramon made it 5-0 early on, but Vasco pulled one back with Guilherme and Renato. The match evened out, but Cubillán, with four minutes remaining, scored a three-pointer to open up a 15-10 lead, giving the red-and-black team a cushion. Marcelinho then added a goal, putting Flamengo up eight points, and Vasco's coach called a timeout. It didn't work. Marcelinho, on a sharp night, scored another three-pointer. JP Batista then extended the lead, and the lead reached double digits (20-10), remaining that way until the end, 26-16 in favor of Vasco.
The second quarter had a protagonist: Rhett. The American scored 10 points in the period, with beautiful dunks and demonstrating chemistry with Cubillán on the alley-oop. It was a more balanced quarter, but at no point did Vasco truly threaten Flamengo. With the advantage open in the first 10 minutes, the Rubro-Negro was able to work the ball and make plays, maintaining the lead at least eight points until closing the first half at 51-39.
The return of the first half saw Vasco more present on the court, with the game focused on Gustavo, and the lead narrowed. Flamengo lacked attacking momentum and missed key plays, helping their rivals grow in the match. But in the end, José Neto's team's control and the players' distribution of points prevailed. Seven different players scored in the half, and collective effort was essential to close out the quarter-final 69-57.
The final quarter only cemented the Flamengo's superiority throughout the match. Despite a very low score (only eight points in eight minutes), Flamengo played well on defense and didn't let Vasco get any closer. They held on to secure their eighth consecutive victory with a score of 89-75.
