After winning the third-place match in the Liga das Américas this Sunday (March 15.03th), coach José Neto addressed several topics, such as the semifinal loss, the balance of the NBB, and plans for the future. Check out what the commander of the Pride of the Nation said:
Match against Peñarol
I don't think we prepared ourselves to be playing for third place. So, from the moment we only had this option, we were either in third or fourth place and we went in to get the best we could. We leave here with a victory, a third place. It's something Flamengo deserves more of, this fanbase deserves more of, and these players deserve more for their dedication. But it's the best we could achieve.
Third place
I told them many times that we have to play with what we have today, with the options we have today. And yesterday we had the option of competing for the title, and that's what we had to think about, not about what happened or what was to come. And yesterday, for us, it was a single game, and unfortunately, we lost. Today is the same thing; we had the chance to compete for third place, and that was the best position we could have achieved. We always have to live with the present.
History of achievements
We achieved a lot, we made history both for Flamengo and for Brazilian basketball, with many accomplishments that Flamengo had last season. Now it's time to look ahead so that we can have new achievements.
Flamengo fans
The fans are a huge motivation, for sure. It's one of the things that keeps us going. Even though we didn't meet expectations, which was winning the competition – and our fans are very used to seeing titles – arriving today and seeing the fans like this is something that keeps us going, focused on continuing to fight.
The cast
I always say: I have a team of men who honor those who trust us. Our sponsors, the club, our fans, who as always have been incredible... Flamengo is always on the court to win, no matter what.
NBB
I often tell them that in any situation we can't dwell too much on what we've already done; the focus now is on the NBB (Brazilian Basketball League). Ceará and Brasília are two tough away games to finish the qualifying phase and then play the playoffs. In a championship decided by the playoffs, we need to be in good shape to play this phase and meet the expectations of the club and our fans.
National basketball
Brazil has always had talent, but as long as it depended solely on talent, we ran a high risk of not getting there. From the moment these talents began to be showcased in an organized way, where we could see that everyone had the single objective of doing good for basketball, everyone benefited. Undoubtedly, the rotation of those who win titles shows the balance of the national league. Flamengo is increasingly investing so that it can always be at the top of international competitions and also the local one, which is very strong.
Brazil in the Americas League
I believe this is a success not only for the teams that are arriving, but also for Brazilian basketball as a whole. Brazil's representation in the continental competition comes largely from the work being done in the national league and the Brazilian national team. Everything is focused on achieving these top positions, and it's a gain for all of Brazilian basketball.
