José Neto on the Pan American Games: "The team can fight for a medal"
Flamengo coach Neto will be Brazil's assistant coach in Toronto 2015

With Flamengo, he was champion of the League of the Americas, Club World Cup champion, and three-time Brazilian champion. With the national team, he participated in the 2012 London Olympic Games, the 2006, 2010, and 2014 Adult World Cups, the 2007 and 2011 U-19 World Cups, and the 2011 Guadalajara Pan American Games. José Neto, coach of the Mais Querido and assistant coach of the Brazilian national team in Toronto in 2015, has no shortage of experience and titles.
Brazil's coach at the 2014 South American Championships, a competition in which the team won the bronze medal that earned the team a spot at the Pan American Games in Canada, Neto believes the team can compete for a podium finish. "The team is preparing well and I believe it can compete for a medal at this Pan American Games. It's a short-term competition, meaning each match can bring you closer or further away from a medal, which is very important. We have to treat each match like a final," he emphasized, before analyzing Brazil's group in the competition.
"A very tough group with opponents who have the same goal as us: to compete for a medal. We'll be prepared to face all our opponents, but we'll focus game by game so we can always give our best. Only then do I believe we can achieve our goal in this competition," he said.
Alongside him on the coaching staff will be the club's physical trainer, Diego Falcão, with whom he has worked since 2007, even before joining Flamengo. Neto sees the partnership between the club and the national team as a facilitator. "The coach's work is greatly enhanced when there is interdisciplinary work on the coaching staff. Each member is incredibly important, which enhances the coach's work. In the specific case of physical training, it helps provide the coach with the conditions he needs to implement his style of play. Diego Falcão, in addition to his professional competence, also has my complete trust to help me make decisions regarding the team. With the Brazilian national team this year, I'm an assistant coach, and we work together to provide the best conditions for Ruben Magnano (Brazil's coach)," he stated.

Brazil is in Group "A" and opens against Puerto Rico on July 21st. Next, the Brazilians face Venezuela (22nd) and the United States (23rd). Group "B" consists of Argentina, Canada, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. According to the competition rules, in the first phase, the teams play each other in a single round robin within their respective groups. The top two teams in each group qualify for the semifinals, using the Olympic crossover system: A1 vs. B2 and B1 vs. A2. The winners decide the title, while the losers compete for the bronze medal.
