Flamengo basketball's latest signing, forward/point guard Leandrinho, begins his physical preparation with the club this Wednesday (August 24.08), starting at 10 am, in Gávea. The forward/point guard for the NBA's Toronto Raptors will be evaluated by physical trainer Rafael Bernardelli, who will outline the player's training schedule for the coming days.
"We'll start with some physical tests, then physical training with runs, interval circuits, and weight training. Only then will he join the rest of the group for tactical training," Bernardelli explained.
Flamengo announced the signing of Leandrinho last Thursday (August 18.08). The club took advantage of the strike in the American Basketball League, declared in July, to sign the player until December. During the "lockout" period, athletes are authorized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to represent other teams, on the condition that they return to their teams at the end of the strike.
In preparation for the Pre-Olympics with the Argentine national team, where Julio Lamas is assistant coach, Flamengo coach Gonzalo Garcia praised the signing of Leandrinho.
"As a coach, having Leandro on the team is an honor and a professional satisfaction, and I think everyone on the team feels the same way. I hope he feels comfortable and happy at the club and helps us lead Flamengo to great results," said Gonzalo Garcia.
The red-and-black team has been training for six weeks in Gávea. Their first challenge will be the State Championship in September (the schedule is yet to be determined). Flamengo will also compete in the South American League and the NBB (New Basketball Brazil).
