In a direct confrontation for a spot in the next phase, Flamengo gave Basquete Curitiba no chance and achieved another important victory in the fourth stage of the Basketball Development League (LDB), at Arena Minas, in Belo Horizonte. With a score of 89 to 67, the Rubro-Negro took another step towards qualifying for the final octagonal. The result left the team with 38 points after 16 wins in 22 games (72,7% success rate).
Flamengo relied on great performances from forward Chupeta, who achieved a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, point guard Danielzinho, with 15 points, forward Rodrigo, with 13 points, and forward Diego, who scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds, in addition to center Cristiano Felício, who also nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
"The key to our victory was the strategy we devised to take away Basquete Curitiba's three-point shots, as they are very strong and have a very high success rate. This facilitated their inside game, but we had Cristiano and Gigante, who handled the situation down there (in the paint). The strategy worked, and their shooting percentage dropped significantly," commented Paulo Chupeta. "It was an essential result for our standings. We remain in fourth place, but still closely followed by many teams that can still catch up. We beat a direct and very strong opponent, Basquete Curitiba," concluded the coach.
The game
The first quarter was dominated by Flamengo. Despite a shaky start, the red-and-black team had a good run in the final minutes of the period, with eight points from forward Chupeta, extending their lead from two to 11 points and closing the first period with a 20-11 score. Just like the first quarter, the second quarter had a strong pace, especially on defense. With a 28-18 lead in the quarter, coach Paulo Chupeta's team took advantage of counter-attacks and went into halftime with a 19-point advantage: 48-29.
Early in the third quarter, Flamengo lost center Cristiano Felício, who left the court with an ankle injury. Even without one of their key players, the team managed to maintain a 20-point lead until the end of the period. The opponent tried to react, but went into the final quarter trailing by 21 points: 72 to 51. In the final ten minutes, Flamengo managed the advantage and secured the victory. With the result practically decided, the teams took the opportunity to give their younger players some playing time.
