If the task of long-range shooting specialists was already complicated, from now on it will be even more difficult and laborious. This is because one of the changes announced by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in April 2008, which will take effect starting with the 2010/2011 season of the National Basketball League (LNB), will move the three-point line further away, to 6,75m, half a meter more than the current distance of 6,25m.
The announcement, made this Wednesday (914.07/XNUMX) by the technical department of the National Basketball League, presents four other changes: in the free throw line and in the restricted area; in the line for the lateral throw-in; in the semicircles in which attack fouls will not be considered or called and in the twenty-four seconds of possession of the ball.
According to the publication of official note No. 119/2010, sent by the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB), also this Wednesday, the entity's official competitions will be held in accordance with changes in the sport's official rules as of October 1, 2010.
National League runner-up coach Paulo Chupeta approved FIBA's changes and hopes his team will take advantage of the South American League in October to adapt as quickly as possible.
"These changes help us because we'll always be on the same page as international basketball. It's another wise move by the League that deserves to be applauded," said the Flamengo coach.
The top scorer of the 2009/2010 season and the country's greatest three-point specialist, Marcelinho recognizes that many athletes will need time to adapt, but assures the red-and-black fans that changing the distance from the three-point line by half a meter will in no way diminish their offensive impetus.
"It's a small difference, just 50 cm. Some players are used to shooting from long range, and others are used to shooting closer to the line. It's all a matter of adjustment. Some will have a little more work to adapt, others won't. For me, it doesn't change anything. I shoot from anywhere," joked the red-and-black captain, who believes in more attacking games, with higher scores and more possession for the teams.
Below are the changes to the FIBA rules:
Art. 2.2.3 Free-throw lines and restricted areas
The restricted areas (paddle) will be rectangular areas marked on the playing court. The restricted area (three seconds) must be a rectangle (no longer a trapezoid).
Art. 2.2.4 Three-point field goal area
The distance of the three-point line shall be 6,75m (not more than 6,25m).
Art 2.2.6 Lines for replacement on the side
The two short lines shall be marked on the outer edge of the court, opposite the scorer's table and bench areas, with their farthest edge 8,325 m from the inner edge of the endline; that is, aligned with the top of the three-point line. During the last two minutes of the game and overtime periods, following a time-out granted to the team entitled to a throw-in in its backcourt, the subsequent out-and-in shot shall be taken from the side opposite the scorer's table, from the throw-in line, and no longer from the center line extended.
Art. 2.2.7 Semicircles in which offensive charges will not be considered/marked.
Semicircles in which offensive charges will not be considered must be marked on the playing court with their inner edge being 1,25 m from the center point of the basket (projected onto the floor). An offensive foul must never be called if the attacker makes contact with a defender within the semicircle.
Art. 29 Twenty-four seconds
If the throw-in is administered in the backcourt, if required by the applicable rules, the shot clock shall be reset to 24 seconds.
If the throw-in is administered in the frontcourt, if required by the applicable rules, the shot clock shall be adjusted as follows:
If the clock shows 14 seconds or more remaining at the time the game is stopped, it shall not be adjusted and shall remain the same time.
If 13 seconds or less remain on the shot clock at the time the game is stopped, the clock shall be reset to 24 seconds.
