The red-and-black athletes Marcelinho Machado and Marquinhos presented themselves with the Brazilian basketball team this Monday (21.07). The group's preparation aims at the Basketball World Cup in Spain, which will be held from August 30 to September 14. In the morning, the players carried out the first physical tests at the Esporte Clube Sírio gym and in the afternoon they participated in the press conference, in São Paulo.
Marcelinho and Marquinhos spoke to the press alongside coach Rubén Magnano, Tiago Splitter of the San Antonio Spurs (NBA), and Marcelo Huertas of Barcelona (Liga ACB – Spain). The 39-year-old shooting guard Marcelinho says that overcoming a serious knee injury and a near-perfect season with Flamengo have led him to reconsider his retirement from the national team.
"I've never hidden from anyone the pleasure I feel representing my country, playing for the Brazilian national team, and being part of this group. When I decided to leave the national team, I believed it would be permanent, but certain situations motivated me to return, such as the injury and Flamengo's titles in the Liga das Américas and the NBB. I'm very happy that Magnano called me up and that I can once again be part of this team," said Marcelinho, who will play in his fourth World Cup in Spain.
Winger Marquinhos, who missed the Brazilian national team in 2013 due to injury, thanked the coach for his confidence and emphasized his belief in winning a medal in Spain. "Unfortunately, I couldn't participate in the last tournament due to an injury, but I'm back with great enthusiasm to help my team. We know it's a tough tournament, but we want to fight for a medal. We have a very qualified team with great players, as well as a good coaching staff and structure to put on a good competition," analyzed Marquinhos, champion of the NBB and the League of the Americas.
Also part of the preparation, from July 31st to August 2nd, Brazil will compete in the Rio de Janeiro International Tournament at the Maracanãzinho gymnasium, against the national teams of Argentina and Angola. From August 9th to 11th, it will be the turn of the Buenos Aires International Tournament, against Argentina and Mexico. On August 16th, Brazil and the United States will play a friendly match in Chicago. The Brazilian national team concludes its preparations in Europe by competing in the Slovenia International Tournament against the hosts, Lithuania and Iran, from August 21st to 23rd. The Brazilians will also play a friendly against a team competing in the World Cup in Spain. The team is in Group A, based in Granada, and makes its debut against France, the current European champion, on August 30th at 13 pm.
Preparation for the South American Championship
Another group of Brazilian players is also preparing for the South American Championship, including Olivinha, Vitor Benite, Gegê, and Felício. Last Monday (July 21.07), the team reached the final against Venezuela in a preparatory tournament for the competition. The team lost 67-62 in a tight match.
