FlaBasquete sponsor Estácio honors team captain for 2015
By Communication - Official Club Website - inOn Tuesday morning (01), Estácio de Sá University held Estácio in Sports, at the Tom Jobim campus, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The event addressed the importance of sport and education in the formation of citizens. Sponsor of the red-black basketball, the institution honored the captain of the Pride of the Nation, Marcelinho Machado, with the 2015 Inspirational Athlete award.
The athlete received the honor from his idol—and from the entire Flamengo Nation—Zico. Marcelinho couldn't hide his emotion and happiness at being honored by the Galinho. "I'm very moved to receive this award from my greatest idol. I started playing for Flamengo when I was ten years old and watched Zico constantly at the club. I've always been inspired by him, both personally and professionally. I thank Estácio for this opportunity," he said.
Besides making history on the court, Marcelinho is a Marketing student at Estácio's Distance Learning (EAD) program. With just one course remaining to graduate, the Flamengo player spoke about having to balance training with his studies. "It's not easy, especially since it's a high-performance sport. Basketball demands a lot from us, but it's crucial for an athlete to have a diploma. Sports have an expiration date, and it's crucial not to stop," he stated.
The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo adult basketball team relies on direct funding from its sponsors – SKY and Estácio – in addition to investments from Tim via the State Sports Incentive Law/State Secretariat for Sports, Leisure and Youth (ICMS).
