Marcus Vinicius Vieira de Souza, known as Marquinhos, has earned the respect and admiration of the nation after his dedication to honoring the Sacred Mantle. A standout in many great matches and titles, the number 11 wants much more this season.

Exclusively for the official website, Marquinhos recalled the memorable moments for Orgulho da Nação, highlighting the importance of the Flamengo fans every step of the way. "It's been five intense years. Flamengo is a learning experience every day, so I'll continue to do so. I've had incredible games and moments here; experiencing and understanding what it means to be a Flamengo fan is something different. I'm getting to understand that every year," said the player.

My most memorable moment was the final against Paulistano, which took place on my birthday with a packed Arena da Barra. It was a very special day. Hearing the fans sing happy birthday was truly memorable and gave me a boost for the match. I remember that game as if it were yesterday.

The first year was difficult. We built a very strong team and then suffered a serious injury to Marcelo (Machado), our captain and a man who lived for Flamengo. Playing without him in the first season was difficult. We had ups and downs. We managed to win the NBB, which was a milestone for us because we led the entire season and had 21 consecutive wins. When we lost our unbeaten streak, it was difficult, but we overcame a lot of challenges and a lot of pressure.

This is a very good relationship, one of affection, of believing until the end. We've played several times while losing, with the fans always supporting us. Flamengo is that: it's grit, it's passion. Having this exchange of affection, their constant belief, is something incredible that we've built. I hope they continue to support us, because we still have a lot to give in return.

 Changes from Marquinhos, who arrived in 2012, to 2017

Every year I end up changing a little, as we're always changing players on the court, winning titles. It's always difficult to restructure and adapt to the situation. This year will be a challenge, as we've changed a lot of players. Currently, it's practically just Olivinha and myself from the previous starting five. The experience I've gained these seasons is important, as I'm readjusting according to the team's needs.

The feeling is of doing a job well, always striving to improve. That's my biggest concern when a championship starts: doing something different to help the team win. This is closely tied to the team performing well. Last year, I had one of my best seasons, but we didn't win. I don't really seek to be the star; I just want to help us achieve victories. That's the only way I'll be remembered, and that's what's been happening in recent years.

What to expect from 2017

We have many challenges ahead, and that makes everything even better. It's a busy year, and we have a lot to fight for. I hope we deserve it, that the team fights hard for victories, and that we win many titles.
