They've been teammates since 2012. Together, they've won Flamengo's biggest basketball titles, including four consecutive NBB Championships, the Liga das Américas, and the World Cup. They share a room when they travel, spending most of their free time playing video games. While the atmosphere is laid-back when they're together, their determination and dedication during matches reveal another side of this duo. Marcelinho Machado and Olivinha are good teammates and took advantage of the week without games for Novo Basquete Brasil to visit FlaMemória, Flamengo's interactive exhibition in Gávea. On the Pride of the Nation's captain's birthday, Olivinha exclusively tells the Official Website what it feels like to share the court with "MarceZico," as he is affectionately called by the fans.
"It's a great honor for me to play alongside Marcelo. He's a guy who truly deserves everything that's happened and is happening in his career. He's won titles everywhere he's been, and here at Flamengo, in my opinion, he's changed the level of basketball at the club. After his arrival in 2007, Flamengo has won practically everything, and he's been a key player in every campaign. I'm privileged to be able to play alongside him and help him write this beautiful story. I sincerely hope he wins many more titles with the Mengão jersey before he retires," says Olivinha.
Upon entering FlaMemória, the duo reconnected with some old friends: the championship trophies. In addition to the state championships (they won six together), they also held trophies from the four NBB (Marcelo won the first edition as well, but Olivinha wasn't yet part of the squad), the Liga das Américas, and the Intercontinental Cup. The distinguished visitors were overcome with emotion.
"It's always a great feeling to see all our achievements. As soon as we get close (to the trophies), we start remembering some good moments and stories. We're training to start another NBB playoff and, without a doubt, getting close to these trophies gives us great motivation to seek another victory, to continue writing our history in Flamengo basketball," concludes FlaBasquete's number 16.
Flamengo awaits its NBB9 quarterfinal opponent, which will emerge from the match between Pinheiros and Vasco. Flamengo finished first overall in the qualifying round, securing home court play in the playoffs until a potential final and a direct pass to the quarterfinals. Captain Marcelinho Machado turned 42 on the 12th and continues his stellar basketball career with the Red-Blacks.
