There was no shortage of emotion and spirit from the Flamengo fans on the court this Saturday at Arena Carioca. The excitement began early with tributes to Marcelinho and Marquinhos, celebrating their 300th and 200th games in the NBB wearing the Sacred Mantle. There was spirit in a match that started for Flamengo, saw Bauru come from behind, and then, with great control, José Neto's team took the lead when it mattered most, at the end of the third quarter, and never trailed again.
With a 75-61 victory over Bauru, Flamengo maintains its pursuit of first place in the NBB and earns its third consecutive victory in the competition. In the first round, Flamengo also defeated its São Paulo rival, giving it an advantage in a future tiebreaker. In the next round, on March 03rd, Flamengo will host Minas Tênis Clube at Arena Carioca 1, resuming the championship.
Marquinhos celebrated his 200th game with style. Once again, he was the game's top scorer (23 points), followed by JP Batista (14), and made the difference. His precise touch sealed the lead at the end of the third quarter, when Flamengo closed at 53-49, a crucial factor in the game's finale.
Before the game, Marquinhos and Marcelinho were honored. During the game, they were outstanding. Marcelinho was sparing with points (only eight), but dished out four assists that broke down Bauru's defense.
The first quarter saw Flamengo start strong, quickly opening up a significant lead (14x6), but suddenly stopped and saw their opponent come close with just a four-point difference.
The second quarter was the opposite. Bauru dominated the half, scoring 20 points, playing better defense, and turning the game around, closing it out 30-32 with Hettsheimeir scoring with 30 seconds left in the first half.
Seeing the team needed more intensity, Neto made changes. With Flamengo five points behind (35-40), Pilar came on and immediately hit a three-pointer, setting the Arena ablaze. It was the key to the comeback. Cubillán scored, and Flamengo took the lead. With two free throws, Michael put Bauru back in front. Varejão pulled one back (44-45), and Marcelinho's three-pointer turned the game around again (47-45). From then on, Flamengo never relinquished the lead.
The final quarter was all red and black. The defense worked well, and the team went up 16-3 in the opening minutes, taking the lead. Then it was just a matter of holding on until Cubillán sealed the victory with 13 seconds remaining.
